New IUFRO Report Calls for New Approach of Forest Values
The new IUFRO report titled “International Forest Governance: A Critical Review of Trends, Drawbacks, and New Approaches” provides a comprehensive analysis of international forest governance since 2010. Launched at the UN Forum on Forests in New York this Friday, the report highlights the increasing climatization of forests, which emphasizes their role as carbon sinks, possibly at the expense of their ecological and social functions.
The report, produced by IUFRO’s Science-Policy Programme, reveals that despite various international efforts, the success in slowing deforestation is limited and challenging to measure. It calls for moving beyond mere deforestation rates to evaluate the effectiveness of policies. Instead it proposes new approaches that prioritize human and ecological well-being, suggesting that governance reforms should foster more inclusive and equitable international collaboration.
The sub-plenary session S4.3 will focus on this report on Thursday, June 27, 02:30 – 03:30 PM (CEST).
