Forest experts from 85 different countries met at the scientific IUFRO hybrid conference held in Vienna last week. Forward looking dialogues, panel discussions, knowledge sharing and meetings about the role of forests in an unstable world were on top of the agenda.
The role of forest research
The conference explored the critical roles of research for the conservation and sustainable management of forests and trees under rapidly changing environmental, economic and social conditions. Six selected topics framed the discussions: Forests and Human Health – A One Health Perspective, Bioeconomy, Forest Degradation and Restoration, Forest Genetic Resources for Future Resilient Forests, Forest and Water and Gender (un-)Equal Networking.
Knowledge exchange for Sustainable Development
This global three-day hybrid meeting offered great opportunities for knowledge exchange. Both onsite and within the online conference area there were continuously conversations and networking going on. The meeting offered panel discussions, flash talks, online surveys, Q&A sessions and bilateral meetings.
The program, developed jointly by IUFRO Divisions, Task Forces and Special Programs and Projects, focused on the importance of forests in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The conference has shown the need to maintain and strengthen the efforts to make this world and its forests and trees healthier and more resilient for the benefit of nature and people.
The delegates were welcomed to join in field excursions, business meetings and engage within the IUFRO mentoring program involving students and young forest scientists. The conference guests concluded it was of great importance to meet within this type of forum. The level of engagement also show the importance of global meetings cross different scientific fields.
Join the journey: IUFRO World Congress 2024
