IUFRO at GLF Climate Conference 2022 | COP27

Oct 31, 2022

– Alongside COP27 – IUFRO attend the annual Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) climate conference 2022, inviting to a panel discussion on Forest, Climate, Biodiversity and People.

Potential synergies
Based on the recent publications Forest, Climate, Biodiversity and People: Assessing a Decade of REDD+ and A Decade of REDD+: Stakeholder Perceptions of its implementation, IUFRO will showcase the effects that more than 10 years of REDD+ implementation have had on forests, carbon, biodiversity and people.

Meet the panellists who will describe and explain potential synergies between Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) and REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation considering conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks), as well as provide insights on how local stakeholders perceive REDD+ implementation.

Global knowledge exchange
Nelson Grima, the IUFRO session organizer, speaker and Project Manager of IUFRO-GFEP emphasizes the importance of exploring potential synergy effects across different research fields to accelerate positive development for the future. He further mentions that this kind of meetings contribute to global knowledge exchange, highlighting e.g. the upcoming IUFRO World Congress 2024 as a great future opportunity to continue to pay attention to and discuss the role of the world’s forests. At the IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm, Nelson would like to see discussions on forest conservation and restoration, in combination with forests as a sustainable source of resources, for example, on the program agenda. The upcoming IUFRO World Congress will focus on Forests & Society towards 2050. Forests have a lot to offer and will continue playing an important role in preserving and improving life around the planet, Nelson concludes.

Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) Programme

Nelson is a project manager for the Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) Programme at IUFRO. The programme provides a mechanism for effectively communicating scientific information and expertise to governments and intergovernmental processes related to forests and trees. The core activity of the Programme is the preparation of objective and independent scientific assessments of key issues of high concern, supporting more informed decision-making at the regional and global level.
