Prestigious Award Winners Announced

May 7, 2024

The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) has revealed the recipients of its prestigious scientific awards, set to be honored at the IUFRO 2024 World Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. These awards spotlight individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing forest science and promoting global collaboration in forest-related research.

Dr. Eckehard Brockerhoff of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, has been distinguished with the Scientific Achievement Award (SAA). Recognized for his extensive research on forest biosecurity, particularly in managing biological invasions, Dr. Brockerhoff expressed his gratitude, saying:

“It is a huge honour for me to receive a Scientific Achievement Award, and I am most grateful for this recognition. That this is an award from IUFRO makes it even more special.”

Highlighting the future of forest science, Juliette Archambeau, a recent doctoral graduate, received the Outstanding Doctoral Research Award. Her work on the adaptive genetic variation of maritime pine under climate change pressures is paving the way for more resilient forest management practices. “I am deeply honoured to be awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Research Award from IUFRO,” stated Archambeau.

“This conference offers me a chance to present my work and meet other scientists and stakeholders of the forestry sector, which is an invaluable step forward in my career.”

The congress will also honor Dr. Carol Jean Pierce Colfer, a pioneer in integrating the perspectives of forest dwellers and local communities into professional forestry. Dr. Colfer, who received the Scientific Achievement Award, shared her appreciation for the role IUFRO has played in her career:

“IUFRO has played a dominant role throughout my career, ever since I participated in my first Working Party Conference in 1996. This award from IUFRO is incredibly special to me, affirming the importance of my work and the collaborations that have enriched it.”

The award ceremonies are scheduled across several days during the congress, each underscoring the impact these scientists have made on global forest research and management. As environmental challenges mount, the work of these awardees remains crucial in guiding sustainable practices and policies for forest conservation worldwide. Their recognition at the IUFRO World Congress celebrates the enduring importance of innovation and cooperation in forest science.
